A 5-minute solar oven

"I ordered this to go!"

Today I decided to make a solar oven based on the one we purchased. I used a box from Costco, heavy-duty aluminum foil, a glas pan with a lid, and an enameled bowl. I figured a smaller dish like this would be handy for cooking side dishes to go with whatever is in the large pot in the "real" solar cooker; or it would be handy to heat up leftovers for lunch while dinner was cooking in the big cooker.

Now I've got the foil lining the box. I'm about to peel the carrots in the bowl. They're from last year's garden and I got them out of the root cellar this morning. It's July and they're as fresh and firm as when I dug them last fall.

Here it is, carrots peeled and cut up, and the whole thing out on the picnic table.

I stood on a chair to take this picture. The front (store-bought) solar cooker has potatoes cooking in it, and my homemade one has carrots in it. An hour after I set my carrots out there the water was too hot to put my finger in. That's the same pace the "real" one goes. Yay! Now I have a second solar cooker! I've been really happy with everything I've cooked in the first one. Yesterday we made chicken and dumplings! Yum, they were good!
