Yesterday we got our firewood-cutting permit from the State forest office. Usually we get one from the National Forest, but this year the State forest had been doing some logging on a section near our property and the roads, normally closed, were open for cutting. It's saving us a lot of gas not having to drive our wood-cutting truck up into the National Forest, which is farther away.
Steven is looking at a potential firew00d tree. Dead, but is it too dead? Wood that is too rotted is "punky" and burns poorly.

Steven starts the notch to drop the tree.

Thar' she goes!

Cutting "up" from below in order to get the tree laying flat on the ground.

Time for a tailgate party...to adjust the chain on the saw!

The lower section of the tree. It rolled off the other side of the road.

Steven was using an axe to open up a notch on a different tree he was dropping, and the axe bounced onto his boot.

Left this on his foot. Could have been worse. He fileted his hand pretty good a few years ago with a hatchet, even nicked an artery. Took 13 stitches that time!

The hard-working cat guards the house while we're gone!
