Sat. 08/28/10 Libby & the train tunnel

This morning Marge and I went for a walk to find the lens cap she lost from her camera back on Monday. We were on the hill by the lake when she found it in a bush...talk about a needle in a haystack! And how lucky she was to find it!

In the afternoon we took a driver over to Lake Koocanusa, west of Eureka. This is the only bridge across the reservoir.

We continued on down to the dam, then drove over to Libby and had lunch at McDonalds, which is a total treat for us, since we're so far from McD's! On the way home we went the other way, along the Fisher River and up FS Rd. 36 along the train tracks and the tunnel.

This is the north portal of the tunnel. It's the only route east-west through the north part of the state, and this tunnel is 7 miles ong. Those two huge pointed things sticking sideways out of the tunnel entrance are ventilation fans. The train entrance is on the far right, a small dark spot in this picture.

We saw a westbound freight train waiting to go through the tunnel, so figured one might be coming out of the tunnel any minute. Sure enough, we could hear the echo of the engine and then the tunnel gave birth to this freight train.

More train.

And more train!

Little bunny foo-foo.
After the tunnel we came over Edna mountain and into our neighborhood on the back road through the state forest.

We stopped to feed the buffalo.

Then we threw a canoe on the car and went down to the lake, and Marge and I paddled around the edge of the lake.

The dwelling of an aquatic mammal.
